Legionella Control in Ibiza

WHAT IS LEGIONELLA?

Legionella bacteria is responsible for Legionellosis, a condition that can manifest in two distinct forms:

1.Severe pneumonia, often referred to as "Legionnaires' disease," which can have serious and even fatal outcomes. The incubation period for this illness ranges from 2 to 10 days.

2.A milder illness known as "Pontiac fever," characterized by symptoms similar to those of the flu.

We specialize in providing comprehensive prevention and control treatments for Legionella in various types of installations, including:

• Cooling towers and evaporative condensers.
• Domestic hot water systems featuring storage tanks and recirculation circuits.
• Heated water systems with constant agitation and recirculation, such as in spas, jacuzzis, and similar settings.
• Indoor cold water systems designed for human consumption, including pipes, tanks, reservoirs, cisterns, and mobile tanks.
• Domestic hot water systems without return circuits.
• Evaporative cooling equipment.
• Humidifiers.
• Ornamental fountains.
• Irrigation systems.
• Firefighting water systems.
• Other water-storing systems that may generate aerosols.
With expertise in Legionella prevention and control, we proudly serve Ibiza and Formentera, ensuring a safer environment for all.

HOW CAN LEGIONELLOSIS BE CONTRACTED?

Legionellosis is contracted through the respiratory system by inhaling aerosols or aspirating water containing a high concentration of Legionella bacteria.

Aerosols are tiny droplets that can form when water is sprayed or air bubbles are blown through it. The smaller the droplets, the more hazardous they become. Droplets with a diameter of less than 5 µ can easily reach the lower respiratory tract.

The risk of contracting the disease depends on the concentration, type, and virulence of the bacteria in the aerosol, as well as the duration of exposure.
Person-to-person transmission and ingestion have not been reported.

Installations that can be sources of contamination are those that, once colonized by Legionella, promote the bacteria's growth and generate aerosols.

The following are potential sources of Legionellosis:

• Hot and cold water systems
• Cooling towers and evaporative condensers
• Hot tubs and thermal springs
• Fountains and sprayers • Environmental humidifiers
• Vehicle wash tunnels
And, in general, any installation that uses water and produces aerosols.

To prevent Legionellosis, action needs to be taken across the following three stages:

1. Entry point: By controlling the quality of the incoming water to the installation. It must be controlled, high-quality water with a residual chlorine concentration to ensure its microbiological quality.
2. Multiplication prevention: By hindering and controlling the conditions that promote bacteria growth within the installation, such as temperature and nutrient presence (cleaning and disinfection).
3. Aerosol reduction or prevention: By controlling the generation and release of aerosols (tower placement, increasing aerosol droplet size, etc.).
